Nancy Drew Receives Women Who Mean Business Award – November 17, 2011
Thirty-seven successful and accomplished local women were honored by The San Diego Business Journal at its 2011 Annual Women Who Mean Business Awards. Five special awards were also bestowed, and a $1 million contribution was made to the new downtown library by one of the honorees, at the 18th annual event.
The women were selected for their achievements and contributions to San Diego businesses and the community. An independent panel of judges selected the finalists after reviewing 141 qualified nominations for all of the candidates.
“These individuals have succeeded in their chosen fields, and have strengthened the fabric of our community by their philanthropic and volunteer efforts,” said Randy Frisch, President and Publisher of the San Diego Business Journal.
The event featured Darlene Shiley, a local philanthropist and educator, as the keynote speaker. During her remarks, Shiley pledged $1 million for the new downtown library and presented Mayor Jerry Sanders with a check. Geni Cavitt and Pat Brown were the emcees for the event.
Special Awards were presented to Audrey Geisel, Lifetime Achievement Award; Susan R. Salka, President and CEO of AMN Healthcare, Exemplary Award; Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor of UC San Diego, Community Leadership Award; Ruth Pugh of Dallas Pugh Foundation, Courage Award; and Kris Michell of The San Diego Downtown Partnership, the Mayor’s Special Award.
